current direction.
O.H.BOYD - ARTIST - SCULPTOR IN WOOD
This
sculptor works almost exclusively in wood, above life-size, his work is
characterised by a high standard of research, detail and realism.
Best
known for the 'Longitude' sculpture, (the subject of a booklet available
upon request), now in the collection of Felix Dennis, poet, publisher
and patron of the arts.
Other works include an above life-size interacting pair of figures of
Robert Louis Stevenson and his alter ego, Long John Silver as centre piece
for the Dennis collection.
He
also carved the Victory Crown for the new State Gold Coach "Britannia"
from timber from HMS Victory and presented to the Queen to mark her 80th
Birthday.
He
enjoys portraiture and does a limited number in between his more monumental
works and sees them as a form of refreshment. (see the PORTRAITS page)
He uses roughly the same format for all his portrait busts, that of head,
shoulder and one extended arm that holds and explains what the subject
is about, this attitude greatly extends his ability to tell the tale of
the person, their life and achievements.
He
is presently carving a portrait bust of Prof. Sir Arnold Wolfendale, X1V
Astronomer Royal for the National Portrait Gallery.
The
'Harrison King' work, photos of which are found on this website attracts,
as all his work does, much media attention. A booklet giving a guide to
this figure is being prepared.
This
is an opportunity to commission an exclusive and highly unusual piece
of work from one of the leading English wood sculptors. Further details
of his work are available upon request.
A
detailed expansion of his life and thoughts (if you are brave enough)
is available on the more button below.
